Source of Components used in the production of the +2
Economic necessity meant that the only way to build low volume specialist cars successfully was to source as many parts as possible from the parts bins of the volume manufacturers. The +2 drew heavily on the parts produced by major manufacturers and several components were critical in shaping the design.

Front windscreen - Ford Consul Capri (335) One of the earliest design decisions was to use the Capri's front windscreen glass, steel surround and brightwork. Sadly, having designed around this key component, Lotus discovered that by the time they wished to order these items from Ford, the tooling had been scrapped. Although re-tooling to produce the glass could be afforded, the metals surrounds were simply too expensive to put into production. |

Rear Light Clusters - Alfa Romeo 105/115 Serie Coupé Carello units from the Alfa Romeo Guillia, which could only be purchased in large volumes, so the Elan and Europa were designed to take the same unit. Later cars used Lucas (Jaguar E-Type) units. |
Suspension (front) - Triumph Herald parts Brake Disks - Triumph Herald 5 Speed Gearbox derived from the Austin Maxi. The trim under the front bumper around the radiator grill is also Ford Anglia 5/7 CWT. VAN Model 307E/308E, but it needs cutting to size and re-bending slightly and fitted upside down
The hinges on the boot are Hillman Imp bonnet hinges.
The rubbers on the brake and clutch pedals are also Hillman Imp. I think the air vents on the ends of the dash panel are Hillman Hunter/Rootes Arrows MKII , but I'm not sure.
The steering rack is a modified Triumph Herald (it has the movement restricted with an internal spacer) in addition the +2 has extension pieces on the ends of the rack arms. Can you add any more? Send me a e-mail. |
